Electricity consumption from January to September 2020

I. Electricity Consumption Across Society

From January to September, the total electricity consumption across the nation was 5.4134 trillion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%. In September alone, the total electricity consumption was 0.6454 trillion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 7.2%.

By industry: From January to September, electricity consumption in the primary industry was 63.7 billion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%; in the secondary industry, it was 3.6025 trillion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 0.5%; in the tertiary industry, it was 0.8975 trillion kWh, a year-on-year decrease of 0.2%; and in urban and rural residential areas, it was 0.8498 trillion kWh, a year-on-year increase of 6.0%. In September, the growth rates of electricity consumption in the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries were 11.6%, 8.6%, and 5.1%, respectively; urban and rural residential electricity consumption increased by 4.0% year-on-year.

II. Electricity Consumption by Region

From January to September, the total electricity consumption in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions was 2.5636 trillion, 1.0163 trillion, 1.5262 trillion, and 0.3073 trillion kWh, respectively, with growth rates of 0.4%, -0.4%, 4.2%, and 0.6%, respectively.

In September, the growth rates of total electricity consumption in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions were 7.7%, 9.1%, 6.0%, and 2.9%, respectively. Among them, the growth rates of total electricity consumption in the central and western regions increased by 1.3 and 0.1 percentage points respectively compared to the previous month, while the growth rates in the eastern and northeastern regions decreased by 1.4 and 0.8 percentage points respectively.

From January to September, 17 provinces saw their total electricity consumption growth rates exceed the national average. These are: Yunnan (9.3%), Gansu (6.6%), Inner Mongolia (6.2%), Sichuan (5.7%), Guangxi (5.7%), Tibet (5.6%), Jiangxi (4.3%), Xinjiang (4.2%), Anhui (2.7%), Qinghai (2.6%), Jilin (2.6%), Guangdong (2.3%), Hainan (2.2%), Fujian (2.2%), Guizhou (1.7%), Hunan (1.7%), and Shaanxi (1.4%).

In September, 12 provinces saw their total electricity consumption growth rates exceed the national average. These are: Henan (15.7%), Anhui (14.5%), Hainan (13.7%), Shanxi (11.2%), Yunnan (11.2%), Sichuan (11.1%), Shandong (10.2%), Guangdong (9.7%), Shaanxi (9.5%), Jiangsu (9.0%), Tibet (8.0%), and Hebei (7.9%). Three provinces saw negative growth rates: Beijing (-3.7%), Ningxia (-3.5%), and Hubei (-0.02%).
